Does using an Egg Shampoo for Hair Growth work?

One of the more ‘out there’ ways of regrowing your hair that I’ve heard of is to use eggs. Now, there are many other hair growth myths that aren’t true, but there are elements to this one that really make sense. But can an egg shampoo really work for hair growth?

The answer is that in all honesty, the research is very thin on the use of eggs for hair growth. But, the majority of people do agree that it can help to rejuvenate your hair follicles.

The primary reason for this is that eggs are filled with protein. The protein in the egg will help your hair maintain it’s thickness. Your hair is primarily made up of keratin protein, so using eggs to help strengthen the hair is a no brainer.

As well as the copious amounts of protein that you get from eggs, there are a lot of other vitamins and minerals that they contain too.

What minerals and vitamins do you find in eggs?

The main reason that people started to use egg shampoos is that they were high in protein. But, there are an abundance of other minerals that you’ll find in eggs which are also great for your hair. Some minerals include;

  • Sulfur – Healthy hair already contains a lot of sulfur, but it’s easy to become deficient in it. It’s important to give your hair enough sulfur.
  • Iron – An iron deficiency is one of, if not the, most common way that people experience hair loss through a lack of minerals. Though eggs are full of iron, they’re definitely a good source.
  • Zinc – Zinc is important, not only for the health of your hair, but for your health in general too.
  • Selenium – Many people aren’t even aware of what selenium is. It’s one of the most important minerals for hair loss along with zinc.

As well as minerals, there are also a lot of vitamins that can help with your hair growth – such as;

  • Vit A – Although eggs aren’t filled with vitamin A, they are still a good source of vit A. Of all the vitamins, this is one of the most important as it’s essential for healthy hair.
  • Biotin – A deficiency in Biotin can undoubtedly contribute to hair loss, so it’s important to ensure you’re getting enough of it in your diet.
  • Lutein – Again, lutein is one that you might not have heard of but it’s definitely something you should be aware of.

Why an egg shampoo?

The reason that egg shampoo can be a better idea than just using raw eggs alone is that raw eggs have the ability to dry your hair out. The intensity of a protein treatment for your hair is usually left to professionals, and if you leave the egg mixture on your hair for too long, you’ll undoubtedly end up with dry and lifeless hair. Using a shampoo specifically designed for treating your hair is a good idea because there is a carefully calculated measure of protein – not too much that will leave your hair dry.

Another benefit to opting for an egg shampoo as opposed to just using raw eggs is that you don’t need to worry about the horrible smell – and thought of putting raw eggs on your head! Using raw eggs is an option, but you’ll undoubtedly smell faintly off eggs until you wash your hair thoroughly afterwards. You can use eggs to shampoo your hair, as the video below explains;

Conclusion

It’s pretty clear to see that eggs can be an awesome way to combat hair loss and in fact, promote hair growth. Although it isn’t the most sure way to regrow hair – there are other options that may work better – there’s really little risk of trying an egg shampoo to combat your hair loss.

It will undoubtedly work well with people experiencing temporary hair loss, but the likelyhood a shampoo will help male or female pattern baldness is minimal.
